Here's a quick break down of essential tools and tricks of the trade to a successful SEO campaign.
1. Fresh Content Keep your site updated with fresh and unique content. Remember to focus and saturate your text content to your search phrases and keywords, and don't just spam each page with your keywords. Take the time to write an article for each page on your site that differs from one another.
2. Back Links This will be the most time consuming, annoying, and IMPORTANT part of your campaign. But, trust me - it's worth the hard work. You will need to post comments on blogs and contribute to forums without spamming. Spamming forums, blogs, or any other website will just result in your comment being deleted - meaning you wasted your time.
Look for websites that have a 'Recent Comments' widget/module and save them to your favorites, because these website are amazing for providing tons of great back links. How so? When these websites use that feature, it puts your comment on every single page on that particular website, and some sites have a thousand + pages. And don't waste your time inserting your link into the comment body. Make sure you find website that have a 'Website' field available for you. Here's how to use Google to your advantage when searching for sites that offer a comment field that has the option to add your website:
In the Google search bar type in 1 of these 12 phrases, and change the "ADD YOUR KEYWORD" part to the keywords you want.
For example, I would search Google with the following phrase:
site:.com inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "Chicago, Food, Nightlife"
Google will return results of websites that have a comment option relevant to your SEO campaign.
Here's the full phrases list:
site:.com inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.org inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"
site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "ADD YOUR KEYWORD"

3. Analytics and Website Grading Make sure your site is up to par. Submit your site to Website grading tools like Webpage Graders, Webpage Ranking Tools - not only do you see what you need to work on, you will get a back link out of the effort. Use Google's analytic tool to track your visitors and narrow in on good organic search results.
4. Crawls and Directories Set up a Google Webmaster's tool account and tell Google how often to look at your site for new content. Submit your website to Online directories like DMOZ, Active Search Results, ETC. And every time you submit a comment of contribute to a forum - send a site submission request for that particular website in Google, Yahoo, and Bing. Or use a ping tool like Pingomatic or Squidoo. Here are the links to the submit your sites on Google, Yahoo, and Bing:
Google: http://www.google.com/addurl/
Yahoo (Requires account): http://search.yahoo.com/info/submit.html
